"He Knows the Fire" by Field Notes: Getting through tough periods

After Strong + Courageous, we decided our next song would focus on what we do when things are difficult.

It's one thing to be told to be strong. It's another thing entirely to know that the One telling you to stand has already stood in your exact place — and felt everything you're feeling right now.

That's the heart of He Knows the Fire, and why we built it around Hebrews 2:18.

"Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested."

Why Hebrews 2:18?

Here's what athletes understand better than almost anyone: there's a difference between someone who has seen tough times and someone who has lived it.

Someone else can watch you grind through a brutal practice or witness you pushing through injury or a setback. But the person who truly knows everything you are going through? That's the one who has been through it themselves. Who has taken more hits than we can imagine. Who has felt the weight of the world, known the suffering is coming and even could have avoided it, but instead — kept going.

That's Jesus.

He didn't just come here to preach or provide direction. He stepped into the human experience. He was tempted, tested, and pushed to the breaking point. He felt pressure, betrayal, exhaustion, and pain in ways most of us will never fully comprehend.

And because He went through it — He is able to help you when you go through anything.

That's not a theological abstraction. For the athlete who is grinding through a season that's breaking them down, who is battling doubt, injury, fatigue, frustration and fear — this is the most personal promise in Scripture.

He doesn't just know about your fire. He knows your fire because He walked through it first.

Breaking Down the Lyrics

The Intro: Setting the Scene

"Shadow on my shoulders Pressure getting colder He walked through the flames So I rise as a soldier"

We wanted the song to open exactly where athletes live — under pressure. That shadow on your shoulders is real. The weight of expectations, the cold grip of doubt, the moments when everything feels harder than it should.

But the shift happens when we shift our focus to Him: He walked through the flames. When you realize what He did for you, is it empowering, uplifting and encouraging. It is what give you the ability to rise. It's not rooted in your own toughness, but made possible through Him.

The Hook: Suffering That Strengthens

"He knows my fire — He carried the pain So when I'm breaking, He strengthens again Locked in the battle, but never alone He suffered for me — now I stand in the zone"

The hook is the thesis of the entire song: He went through the absolute worst suffering, and if He did that for you, he's going to stand with you through everything and you are never alone.

That phrase — "stand in the zone" — is intentional. Every athlete knows what the zone feels like. That locked-in state where clarity cuts through chaos. We wanted to capture the idea that when you're grounded in the truth that He knows your fight, it puts you in a different headspace entirely. Not invincible. Not immune to pain. But steady. Present. ...and Focused!

That's the zone God's presence puts you in.

Verse 1: Scars That Relate

"Pain in my chest, but the mission is clear Walk through the dark, but I'm killing the fear Scars in His hands, so I know He relates Fought for my life, so I rise through the weight"

This might be the most powerful line in the whole song: Scars in His hands, so I know He relates.

Jesus didn't come out of the resurrection without marks. He carried them. And those scars aren't a sign of defeat — they're proof of what He endured for you. When you're hurting and wondering if God really understands what you're going through, the answer is written in His hands.

He relates. Completely. Fully. In all situations. Always.

Verse 2: Tested and Ready

"Storm on my mind, but He carried the cost War in my soul, but I'm never lost Tempted and tried, yeah He took every blow So when I'm pressured, I'm ready to go"

Hebrews 2:18 says He was tested — and because of that, He is able to help those who are being tested. We wanted to sit inside that truth. The storms and wars athletes face — mental and spiritual — are real battles. But they are not battles being fought without a guide who has already mapped the terrain.

He took every blow. So when pressure comes, you don't have to absorb it alone. You're ready to go because He already went first.

Verse 3: The Beat Switch and the Breakthrough

"Tear through the chains — I refuse to fall He broke the night — now I stand too tall Suffering Savior, He knows what I face So I hit back hard with a warrior's grace"

The beat switch is the turning point of the song — and the lyrics match that energy.

Warrior's grace. We love this phrase because it captures something unique about the Christian athlete. You're not just fighting to win. You're fighting with grace — with the knowledge that the battle's outcome has already been decided. That's not recklessness. That's confidence rooted in the cross.

"Fire in my lungs — I'm built for the climb Battle in the dirt, but I rise every time He felt the struggle — He knows this fight So I crush my demons and step in the light"

Built for the climb. Rising every time. These aren't just motivational lines — they're declarations of identity grounded in what Christ endured. You are built for this because He built you, and He knows exactly what this fight requires.

The Outro: Already Won

"Through every trial Through every blow He suffered before me So I rise and go

He knows my fire and he already won."

We wanted the outro to land in finality. The intensity of the song settles into this simple, profound truth: He already won.

You're not fighting for a victory that's in question. You're walking in a victory that's already been secured. Every trial, every blow, every moment you're pushed to the edge — He is there with you and He knows the end result and He wins. We trust in Him and can have confidence knowing it's already settled.

The last line is everything: He knows my fire and He already won. Say that over yourself before you compete. Write it on your wrist. Make it your mantra. Because it's true.
