"Strong + Courageous" by Field Notes: Why We Started Here

"Strong + Courageous" by Field Notes: Why We Started Here

When you're starting something new—something you haven't done before—you need more than just a good idea and some desire. You need strength. You need courage. And you need a willingness to trust Him and the process even when the outcome isn't guaranteed.

That's exactly where we found ourselves when we started Plays Bigger and exactly where many athletes find themselves throughout their athletic journey.

So when it came time to choose our first song for Field Notes (audio arm of Plays Bigger), there was really only one verse that made sense: Joshua 1:9.

"This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."

Why Joshua 1:9?

Here's the thing about being an athlete: You live in the unknown.

Every game is uncertain. Every competition puts you to the test. Every training session pushes you into uncomfortable territory where you don't know if you'll hit the lift, make the play, or break through to the next level.

Success is found in taking action, but that first step? It's the hardest one. It feels risky. It feels uncertain. You're stepping into the arena with nothing but faith, preparation, and a willingness to be bold.

Whether you're stepping onto a new team, pushing for a PR that seems impossible, competing at a level you've never reached before, or facing an opponent that intimidates you—that moment requires something deep inside you. It requires strength and courage.

And that's exactly what God gave Joshua when he faced his own impossible moment. He was about to lead an entire nation into unknown territory. The pressure was massive. The stakes were high. And God's command was clear: Be strong. Be courageous. Don't be afraid.

That's the reality you face every time you compete. And we wanted our first song to speak directly to that.

There's also another reason we chose this verse: It's Chapter 1, Verse 9.

Chapter 1. A beginning. A new start. Yes, this is a new beginning for us at Plays Bigger, but more importantly—every time you step up to compete, every time you start a new season, every time you push past what you thought was possible—that's your Chapter 1 moment. We wanted this song to be the anthem for those moments when you need to be reminded: God is with you. Wherever you go.

Breaking Down the Lyrics

We wanted to walk you through some of the key sections of this song and why they hit the way they do.

The Hook: Identity Over Circumstance

"I walk with fire, I don't fold, I don't freeze,
Spirit in my chest, yeah, that power set me free.
Lions don't run when the battle gon' blow,
God on my side — wherever I go."

This is the core identity of the song—and honestly, the identity we want every Christian athlete to carry. You don't fold under pressure. You don't freeze when things get intense. Why? Because the Spirit living in you is greater than any circumstance you'll face.

Lions don't run. And neither do you when God's on your side.

Verse 1: Pressure Meets Promise

"They talk doubt — I talk promise,
My strength ain't mine, yeah, God's the strongest."

One of the biggest battles athletes face isn't physical—it's mental. The voices that say you're not good enough. The doubts that creep in when things get hard. The fear that maybe you don't have what it takes.

This line flips the script. When others talk doubt, you talk promise. And your strength? It doesn't come from you. It comes from the One who's already proven He's the strongest.

Verse 2: The Daily Grind

"Wake up early — grind till it's dark,
Verse on my lips, got fire in my heart.
Courage ain't noise, it's quiet and steady,
When the game gets rough, I stay ready."

Real courage isn't flashy. It's not loud or dramatic. It's showing up early. It's grinding when no one's watching. It's staying steady when the game gets rough.

We wanted to capture that quiet, relentless discipline that defines great athletes. The ones who stay ready. The ones who keep the verse on their lips and fire in their hearts even when it's hard.

The Bridge: Simplicity in the Storm

"I don't flinch, I don't fear,
He's my strength, He's right here.
Every step, every blow,
God with me — wherever I go."

Sometimes the most powerful truth is the simplest one. God is here. He's with you. Every step. Every blow. Every moment of the fight.

You don't have to flinch. You don't have to fear. Because He's right here.

Verse 3: Running Your Lane

"So I run my lane — purpose tight,
Armor on heavy but my soul feels light.
No fear, no shame, I'm ready to show,
God's with me — wherever I go!"

This is one of our favorite lines in the whole song. There's something powerful about running your lane with purpose—not comparing yourself to others, not chasing someone else's dream, but locked in on what God called you to do.

And when you're walking in that purpose? The armor feels heavy, but your soul feels light. That's the paradox of faith. The weight of responsibility paired with the freedom of knowing God's got you.
